Guest Post: The Balanced Bod + Mindful Eating

Hooray for new healthy, like-minded friends in Boston.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the amazing Cara of The Balanced Bod, was my biggest fan at the Natural Living Expo this past fall. She took some great photos and videos or my demos and was a fabulous crowd participant throughout the day. The magic of social media brought us together, post-expo and we’ve been in touch ever since. We  met at Bee’s Knees in Allston last week (review coming soon-go check it out before I even post about it though because it’s incredible) and talked health, wellness, working out, eating good and the realities of trying to live a balanced life. With her Master’s in Nutrition, Cara is a priceless resource for both myself and clients. Check out her services to get you feeling (and looking) great!

Though I know all about cooking well, I feel as though I’m lacking when it comes to mindful eating, really sitting down and thinking about and enjoying my meals. Cara is here to educate us all on how to enjoy our food even more!

5 Basic Steps to Eating Mindfully for Better Health and Wellness

By Cara Mia Scinto, MS, BS, AFAA

Imagine sitting down for a meal. Visualize the surroundings, smells, sounds, sights – anything going through the mind.

Mindful eating involves being aware of every aspect of our experience with food and can enhance the way we nourish ourselves.

Let’s try it out, with a few simple steps:

#1 Make time for meals

Sit down with your food at a table, preferably with others. During the week we are busy and rushed, and many of us will even eat in the car or walking down the street because we have not dedicated time for ourselves. Meal times can be a time to slow down and relax which helps improve digestion and feelings of ease.

#2 Be prepared

Give careful thought to what you want to eat and how you are going to get it. What foods are going to help us feel our best and what meals can be made from these ingredients?

#3 Remove Distractions

As tough as it may be in our ever-growing technological world, that means no cell phones, laptops, TV, etc. at the table.

#4 Use All the Senses

Remember in kindergarten when we learned about the different tastes, textures, sights, and so on? We were teaching ourselves how to have a beginner’s approach to life. Let’s bring that back by taking time to savor each bite, noticing the smells, textures, and tastes of the food.

#5 Abandon the clean plate rule

Observe the body’s natural hunger and satisfaction cues. When we really pay attention to how we feel, we are probably not going to overeat and feel sickly stuffed afterwards.

We can learn to listen to our bodies and trust that they know what we need. This is by no means an easy and perfect process and takes time to make small steps forward. Be patient with progress even when it seems slower than a turtle’s pace. By eating more mindfully, we can learn to enjoy our food and keep ourselves healthy for our lifetime.
